Fund Information:
In January 1993 Dan Dorward, an energetic fifteen year old boy who loved
life and dreamed of flying jets someday, was diagnosed with Ewings
sarcoma, a rare life-threatening bone cancer. For the next two years,
until his death September 25, 1995, he endured countless chemotherapy and radiation
treatments and suffered unimaginable pain. Throughout his suffering Dan
continued his philanthropic activities by participating in various
fundraising campaigns by the local cancer agency. With his positive
attitude and infectious smile he inspired thousands of people.
Having a sick child is expensive and may cause a lot of additional worry for the parents. Many families need assistance with day-to-day expenses such as hospital meals, bus or taxi fare, payment for volunteer
drivers. Others need help with the cost of medications and/or aids to help with day-to-day activities; some need to travel out of province, and these trips can often cost the parent over $5000 per trip.
Unfortunately some kids die and there are also costs associated with
burial.
One of Dans dreams was to set up a charity to help sick kids and their families.
The Daniel Lee Dorward Compassionate Fund for Sick Kids is a way of fulfilling his dream and honoring his
memory, and was officially started June 19, 2003.
The Fund is a charity of last resort, designed to help families cope with the day-to-day and extraordinary costs of having a sick child.
Social workers at the local Children's Hospital will refer families in
need after all other charitable or government resources have been
exhausted. This Fund will help reduce the stress associated with having a child with a chronic and/or life-threatening illness,
improving the quality of family life.
The Fund will be supported by corporate sponsors, private donations, memorial
bequests, and by volunteers like you, who can help with publicity and
fundraising.
